Party Frock Paranoia

I bought a dress last weekend from BCBG for my husband's holiday party. BCBG is my place to go for  holiday dresses. They generally fit my frame well and I like many of their styles, which makes it an easy dress source for to rely on, as I always wait until the last minute. The party is this Saturday.

I am tired of black frocks, so this year the theme is Gold. This interesting number (and its semi-decent price point) won out over the rest of the inventory in their small store on Union Street.

I really like how the color is very festive, and a simple classic silhouette, and I've never owned a lacey anything really, so why not, right? But now that I have it at home the paranoia set in: does it look too much like lingerie? Is it too close to the color of my skin?

I'm going Black for my clutch and shoe accessories, mainly because that's what I already have in my closet. My Kate Spade clutch has gold-colored details so it's a nice match to the gold of the dress. My shoes are black patent, which matches the patent trim of the clutch. I will probably buy a black shawl for my shoulders. I plan to wear my hair in a low, curled ponytail.

I would appreciate your opinions - should I get a gold-colored bracelet/cuff or gold earrings? Or do you think it looks fine as-is? Or should I just exchange the dang thing for something else? Please help!

Well it's hard to tell just from pictures but I am going to be honest with you, my first reaction was that it looks like a full slip. It could be the tonal effect with your lovely skin as you pointed out, and certainly the style of the wide straps is very reminiscent to me of full slips that ladies wore back in the day.
I think you have a gorgeous figure so of course it looks great on you but I would return it for something else!
Regardless of what you decide, keep us informed! What to wear to these types of parties is always an interesting topic!

Ack, you totally hit the nail on the head Dani! I kept getting this feeling that it reminded me of *something*, and I think you're right about how it looks a lot like an old-fashioned slip. Eeek! Thank you for your honesty. It looks more gold in person, but not a lot more. I have 10 days to return it for store credit so if I have time I'll go exchange it at their flagship store downtown. I will definitely post the results here one way or the other. :)
Thanks again for the feedback!

You look beautiful, but it looks too much like a slip to me.

First of all, you look great in the dress, but I agree with Dani that is looks a lot like a slip. I think you can easily wear it for a party at a friend's home, but for an office party I always think of something more conservative as a safer option.
Have you tried on a cropped cardigan or jacket with it? Sometimes layering a bit over a dress like this can work. Either way, what matters is how you feel - as long as you feel great-you'll look fabulous!
BTW-Great weather in the Bay Area today!! If you have time, try my favorite - Trina Turk in Burlingame. They have 25% off Friends & Family now and a ton of pretty party dresses.
