I cruised Kate Spade's sale section, and found two bags that could work for using at the beach or pool... I desperately need some kind of bag to stash my trashy mags, sunglasses, sunscreen, and coverup in. Both of these are pretty overpriced, but I might justify buying one if I could use it on weekends or casual outings after we return.
Exhibit A: Fiesta Park Judy

Pros: could definitely be used as a weekend bag in SF -- look how the vibrant colors contrast so nicely against the model's jeans, which I find myself wearing often.
Cons: unlined. I'm afraid tahitian sand could get stuck in the straw and never be dislodged. Which might not be the worst thing in the world, but still something to consider.
Exhibit B: Beachcomber Sophie

Pros: I love both colors and think the pattern is beautiful. Slub linen and it's lined in a pretty contrasting color, yum.
Cons: more expensive, don't think I would use it so much once we get back (but maybe the brown one more), since it's more distinctly "tropical" looking.
So, here are my style questions to you lovely aficionadas out there: which would you choose for a vacay in tahiti and why? Does anyone own either of these, and if so how do you use them?

i would say save your money for tahiti. i am sure you have a bag you can use. my big longchamp is wonderful at the beach!
I lovvveeee the first bag! The colors are so fun and could definitely work back in the city for a park picnic or toting around at the farmer's market. However, if you'd rather save the money for your vacation what about just a plain, classic tan straw bag? I'm sure you could find a reasonably priced one and it would serve the same function at the beach and back at home.
Anything over $30 is a lot for a beach bag, imo. I don't want to have to babysit a bag, wondering if the sun will ruin it, water, etc... Consider this straw tote from Old Navy. Only $20.
Gigi's right! Old Navy it and save your $$$ for the dress or bag or whatever it is you know you will fall in love with once you get there.
Hypothetically though, if forced to choose one, I'd get Exhibit A and get a seamstress to make removable washable lining for it on the cheap.
Hey stop by the BCBG store downtown before you leave! I bought a beach tote for $18 on sale and I didn't have to worry about ruining it on vacation. I also bought a fedora hat and some cute dresses (50% off sale).
If your mind is set on one of the Kate Spade bags (it happens LOL), I'd go for brown Sophie. I wouldn't see myself wearing Judy anytime after August (it would look cute with bright summer dresses and summer clothing but I don't wear those after August anyway).
I meant wearing Judy after August in SAN FRANCISCO, not on vacation. Oooops :)
You all have talked some sense into me. :) I'm holding off for now in search of a better deal. Thanks for the link Gigi, and SFCA, thank you for reminding me about BCBG! I'll have to pop in there and have a look this weekend.
