We don't plan on eating there beyond trying it out once since hotel restaurants are usually overpriced. I'm looking forward to trying out street vendors and local restaurants much, much more.
After looking in our travel book, I came across some other restaurant/night club descriptions that make me think I should take just a couple of dresses that can be "dressed up" for going out in the evenings. I came across this passage in my Lonely Planet guide:
Dress codes are enforced [in nightclubs] and men in shorts or flip-flops will be turned away; women can get away with wearing as little as they like.
Meh, heh heh! Good thing hubs is packing his Sperry's.
I bought JCrew's Shirred Dress dress during their extra 30% off sale about week and a half ago. There are still a couple sizes left in the black color online for anyone interested. I plan on bringing only this and a cotton strapless dress from JCrew (see this post, minus the cardi) for dress-up occasions.

The (unfinished) hem needs to be trimmed as it's too long on me, even with heels. In this case, I'm glad the hem is unfinished - I don't feel bad at all about giving it a little haircut myself that way. I like how the straps are removable, and this can be worn without a bra -- a definite plus in the hot & humid tropics.
All gussied up in the hopes that this meets dress code requirements. I could really use a rattan clutch accessory but unfortunately I don't own one. My favorite Kate Spade shoes more than make up for it, I hope.

I'm probably over thinking the whole honeymoon wardrobe thing. By the start of week two I might go native, wear nothing but a grass skirt, and refuse to leave.

It could happen.

We actually just got back from St Regis in Bora Bora a couple of weeks ago and before we left SF it honestly didn't cross my mind to:
a) go to clubs there or
b) wear heels
The resort itself has a single bar and three restaurants. Keep in mind that people usually go to resorts to just relax and not for nightlife (we went powered hang gliding, horseback riding and ziplining in Maui and this time we didn't want any activities). Even staff members we spoke to said they were "bored" since nightlife is practically nonexistent there. Looking back, it may have been a little challenging to get around in heels and I'm glad I didn't bring any :)
I had a pair of gladiator sandals with me which I could dress up or down and flip flops. The first night at a restaurant I wore my sandals; the second night I actually wore flip flops. I haven't noticed any women in heels and staff didn't say anything about my flip-flops. Staff members wear white linen clothing (sleeveless shirts and pants) and I think that everyone (guests and staff) go for "comfortable, breathable" materials over elegance in general :)
HTH
No way! Good for you. We are staying at Le Meridien on Bora Bora for a few days. I really wanted to stay at the St Regis (especially the overwater bungalows, drool), but it was too expensive. :) We're staying for two weeks at Le Meridien on the island of Tahiti itself, and might go out to the clubs in Pape'ete for a couple of nights, although we might be too tired after diving/swimming etc.
I have some gold-strapped JCrew sandals which look fancy but are really just dressed up flip flops that I'm bringing, plus casual Rainbows. I think I'll leave the heels at home after your feedback. :)
Your advice helps a lot. Thank you for telling me about your experience there. I hope you had a good time!
I have another question, if you don't mind: how were the mosquitos, particularly in the jungles? We're bringing "Natrapel" which has Picaridin as its active ingredient. I want to stay away from Deet since it's supposed to be pretty awful for you. What was your experience like?
Hi again :)
(just got back from a Giants game, quick response before I go to bed).
- Mosquitos: it was Winter time in French Polynesia when we went there (Southern Hemisphere) so the temperatures, although high for us, were low for them (suckers hehe). My husband kept spraying himself with mosquito lotion (I didn't) but we haven't seen any mosquitos or had ANY bites during our trip. We didn't go hiking so I'm not sure if that changes the mosquito situation. The short answer is- I bought the lotion over there because I didn't want any excess weight and I assumed that the country with a mosquito problem would have a solution to it :)
-Le Meridien hotel in Tahiti was our layover on the way to Bora Bora!!!! You can walk to supermarkets from there, you don't even need a cab (buy and bring wine, chocolate, cheese etc. with you to Bora Bora, you won't regret it). There is a pharmacy right next to Le Meridien; this is where we bought Mosquito preventative lotion AND Epidermine (in case you do get bitten).
-Pack light: they are VERY strict with luggage weight in between the islands (which means if you do leave heavy pumps and other high heels at home, you can bring food and wine to Bora Bora with you :) We actually brought wine in our hand luggage and our chocolate in our checked luggage. If you miss that opportunity, take the boat from your Bora Bora resort to town and go to their supermarket- french baguettes are 60 cents! (We ate A LOT of cheese at the resort that we bought in town)
- Bring mineral water spray for face and a small fan for the trip!!! Once you're at the Tahiti airport, it gets really hot and there is no air conditioning (sounds ridiculous but you'll see what I mean once you're there). We had to wait for 2 hours for our flight to Bora Bora and I hated myself and everyone around me those 2 hrs...
If you'd like to see pictures of Le Meridien in Tahiti, anything in Bora Bora or Mosquito products (still have them) just let me know! I'll email them to you.
Hope you guys will have a great trip!
Hi again!
Sorry I am finally writing back -- I keep meaning to set up a blogger email address and haven't gotten around to it. :)
Thank you so much for the advice... I really appreciate it, and am very glad to hear about the wine/chocolate/cheese/baguette potential over there. :D We'll definitely be able to save a lot of money on food that way! Would you mind, in your email, letting me know how much money you spent on food per day in both Tahiti and Bora Bora? My husband is building our budget right now and wants to know. ;)
My email is:
maugust (at) gmail.com
Thank you!
Ms.Mer
