JCrew Review: Tweed Dauphine Jacket

I popped over to JCrew on Monday evening to use up my rewards card before it expired at the end of that day, and to check out their new arrivals.

I've never tried any of their tweed jackets, although I have admired them from afar. I spied the Tweed Dauphine Jacket and had to give it a try. It's way out of my price range at $350, but I thought I'd try it anyway to satisfy my curiosity.

No comment on the paint-splattered overalls.

This is a size 0, my regular JC size. It fastened in the front with a hook clasp that was kind of difficult to fasten/unfasten. This jacket had a little bit of gathering at the elbows and in the back, which made it "poof" out a bit. It's a little hard to see in the photos. This might be so that it allows more freedom of movement, but I think I would have preferred a more straight line.

Looking at these photos makes me think I could have sized up. It looks a little too snug in the shoulders.

Very nice fabric, loved the feel of it and the interwoven colors. The buttons looked nice, and not cheap-looking to me. I think I'm a sucker for these frayed edges as well.

I was hoping it would channel Coco Chanel more, but I probably had unrealistically high expectations. Especially since I was hoping to channel Audrey Tautou as Chanel. A girl can dream, right? Le sigh...

Overall I liked the jacket, but just felt that it wasn't for me. I can't help thinking I shouldn't sport this kind of look until I'm over 35. I have nothing against the fabulous over-30 ladies out there, but this jacket in particular that feels too "mature" for me right now.

I would love to have a tweed jacket some day, as I think it would be a great wardrobe staple. My (not-so-focused) search of a nice tweed jacket continues. Some day I will find my tweed soul mate!

Anyone own a JC (or other) tweed jacket? How do you usually style it?

Anthro had a similar jacket that benefits from a defined waist. Almost picked one up in store a few weeks ago on sale, but I really do not need another coat/blazer.

Ok, I'm over 35! :) Got this in the fall version (blushed tweed collier) and this is now the third iteration of the jacket (sultana being second). I am surprised they keep rehashing it, but then again, this tweed is certainly different and some may really prefer this version. Thanks for the review; sorry it didn't work out for you. Have you looked at the Jubilee?

Tastymoog: thanks for the link, I going to check it out! :)

Anon@11:33 - Nothing meant against the over 35 set! 30 is the new 20, right? I'm going to be there soon enough. ;)
This jacket must be popular if they keep reworking it. I checked the jubilee and it has potential, but only available online. Thanks for the rec. :)

I like the look of this jacket, but it's not something I would ever wear. I also admired the Blushed Tweed Collier that anon mentioned.
( My personal thing with jackets like this: Like tastymoog points out, how many "little jackets" does a gal need? Maybe in a warmer climate like SanFran, but I'm not going to be wearing my "lil' jacket" around the house, or even to a dinner, meeting etc.)

This jacket is too matronly for you, MsMer. I think you deserve a REAL CHANEL! ;)
You would rock it!

Dani -- agreed about weather. I could probably get more use out of something like this in our (relatively) temperate climate.

Real Chanel... I wish! If you find something at that vintage fashion store in Paris, do pick one up for me -- but only if it's 100 Euros or less. As if that would ever happen! ;)

I really, really like this jacket actually. I think it would be a really hip/youthful look with a pair of distressed jeans, heels and a cool bag. I am on an active quest for a perfect tweed jacket, but then, I iz older than you - jusssst shy of 35 actually. (:

JC's tweeds need to go on sale already!

I just ordered this jacket. It's on sale for $99!! I'm actually a J. Crew employee so it was a mere $50 for me. I am BEYOND ecstatic! Contrary to the common perception of tweed coats, I find this one to look quite youthful, especially with the bunching details which gives it a bit of cute puffiness..like princess sleeves. I actually just turned 23 and don't feel like this jacket is too mature. It will look adorable with my hair down in soft casual waves, rolled-up skinny jeans, and with some punchy colored heels for a more modern effect.

I never comment on blogs, but I can't resist. As an older woman, I think you should reconsider waiting to wear a jacket like this. This style only looks good on under 30 year olds because it's obvious you are young and it becomes youthful/interesting. Otherwise a jacket like this one makes a woman look really really mature in a bad way... conservative, old and dated. Chanel-ish jacket styles should only be worn by the young at this point in time. Unless a woman wants to look like a conservative socialite, in which case go for it.

I'm a huge fan of the Chanel-esque tweed jacket, and I wear mine often! I found one on ebay and forget which brand it was, but it was a cheap alternative to the Chanel brand. My other one is from a UK company called "Queens Wardrobe" and it's pink with a gold chain detail at the borders and pockets. I'm 25 and rock it with jeans and flats and a quilted bag (ala the Marc Jacobs Stam bag). You'd look fantastic in the look, and even in the winter I wear it under a coat..it's just a structured sweater really;) I feel French and elegant in it, and as a NY-er, it's perfect for a lunch date with the girls or a trip to the museum.
