DIY JCrew Costume Jewelry | Pearl and Chain Necklace | Part 1: Supplies

Today I will share the supplies I used to create my own version JCrew's Pearl-and-chain necklace, and tomorrow I'll show how you can make your own too, on the cheap. On the downlow. On the knockoff. Ok. I'll stop.

A photo of JCrew's Pearl and Chain necklace we will be reproducing from their site:

Materials
1. 28" of fine gold-plated/gold-filled chain of your choice
2. gold wire
3. 13 glass or plastic pearls, 10mm diameter
4. 2 jump rings & 1 clasp of your choice -- I used a spring clasp (honestly though, this necklace is so long you really don't need a clasp since you could just slip it over your head. I guess you'd only need it if you want to be able to double-wrap it. It's up to you!)
5. Ruler
6. Jewelry plier set
7. Wire cutters
8. Something to hold your wire for you while you work (I use pliers and hold them between my thighs, but that's pretty ghetto. I really need some kind of bench clamp. I do get quite a thigh workout, though... it's like a Thighmaster!)

The wire next to the chain, so you can see their relative proportions. Also showing the wire specs on the sticker because honestly, I'm not sure what they mean. What kind of unit does "GA" stand for, anyway?

Zee tools. Left to right: large pinchers, round tweezers, bent-tip tweezers, small pinchers, wire cutter, and pliers with tape (to protect the wire from the rough surface. Would love a bench clamp in place of these.)

10mm pearls with an antique finish (I placed a white luster pearl above it, so you can see the difference in color), and gold chain.

Photos of the process will come tonight/tomorrow! For a photo of the end result in real-life, see this post.

Can't wait to see the finished product and directions!

I think GA stands for gauge. This wire has gauge of 24. Gauge size goes up as the wire gets thinner.

GA = Gauge... the lower the number, the thicker the wire.
